Sunset Fort, Galle
There's Galle and Galle Fort. We stayed at Galle Fort. Huge Dutch influence here. We visited an old church and then checked into Sunset Fort. Our room had a sliver of sea view, a balcony and was very good. WiFi reception was better at the end of the corridor. We dumped our bags and went to explore.
There are many lanes to discover, but we headed out to the ramparts to see the sea and walk around. There's a stunning view of Galle cricket ground next to the clocktower. The Portuguese were here, then the Dutch and then the Brits. Everywhere you go, there are historical reminders.
An old Dutch hospital now houses restaurants. We had a nice authentic Sri Lankan curry at one place. We found Galle to be a great place to wander. Tuk-tuks are everywhere - it's the main mode of transport. Great place, wish we'd stayed another night. There's a small beach next to the lighthouse. We never ventured outside the fort because there was plenty to see inside.
There are many places to stay in Galle and I think for the whole trip we never paid more than US$50 per night. Some had breakfast included. Most accommodation was clean and comfortable.
